Report by CTBUH Staff

The Tall Building Structures Room was exemplified by a number of panel discussions.
The Tall Building Structures Host Room, sponsored by DeSimone, explored contemporary trends in structural engineering. Through a series of case studies, lectures, and panel discussions, representatives in this room covered performance based seismic design, pre-fabricated engineering, and non-conventional structural patterns among other topics.
Day one featured a series of presentations focused primarily on a number of case studies related to structural design along with several presentations on various structural typologies. Presentations covered the structural design of the Vienna Donau City Tower and 4 World Trade Center as well as non-conventional structural designs ranging from hexagrids to pre-fabricated modules.
Day two continued the trends of day one. As part of a larger panel discussion, Dan Kaplan, Senior Partner, and Fatin Anlar, Senior Associate, both of FXFOWLE, presented a case study on Allianz Tower, arguing that a design approach must address the technological limitations, economic constraints, and cultural differences of the place in which a project is built. They described the design and architectural intent of the tower through the lens of this specific design approach.
Later in the day, Vincent DeSimone, Chairman, and Stephen DeSimone, President, DeSimone Consulting Engineers, joined Bjarke Ingels, Founding Partner, Bjarke Ingels Group, to discuss their project in Miami, The Grove at Grand Bay. The group discussed the unique structural design of the twisted towers as well as the design inspiration behind the complex.
